源自北日耳曼语支。可能与挪威语 flanta (“炫耀，四处走”)、冰岛语 flana (“四处走，匆匆忙忙”)和法语 flâner (“四处走，晃荡”)有关。
还有说法称，其可能与瑞典语 flankt (“松垮地”)（对比英语 flaunt-a-flaunt）有关，其源自flanka (“摇晃”)，其为flakka (“摇摆”)的鼻音化变体，与中古英语 flacken (“来回走，颤动”)有关。还见flack。
