來自古希臘語 ἐννεάς (enneás)、ἐννεάδος (enneádos, “九人的身體”) +‎ -ad (指定單位的後綴)；可分析為ennea- +‎ -ad。希臘語詞彙ἐννεάς和ἐννεάδος衍生自ἐννέᾰ (ennéa, “九”)^[1] (源頭來自原始印歐語 *h₁néwn̥ (“九”)) + -ᾰ́ς (-ás, 由數字構成抽象名詞的後綴)或-ος (-os)。
