源自意大利語 arcipelago，根据古希臘語 ἀρχι- (arkhi-, “主要的”) + πέλαγος (pélagos, “海洋”)构成，为爱琴海的名称。爱琴海有很多岛屿，而“Arcipelago”原是指爱琴海的专有名词，后泛化到可以指代有很多岛屿的海，后面又到这种海中的岛屿。
