源自中古英語 taper，源自古英語 tapor (「蠟燭，燈芯」)，其詞源不詳。可能源自拉丁語 papyrus (「紙莎草」，中世紀時指「蠟燭芯」)。若如此，則是papyrus and paper的同源對似詞。另可能源自凱爾特語族中某個與愛爾蘭語 tapar、威爾士語 tampr (「火把」)有關的詞，亦對比梵語 तपती (tápati, 「溫暖，發熱」)。還見tepid。
