最早的使用（16世紀末期）意指「肆無忌憚地花費」以及「散布到一個廣闊的區域」。來源不詳。可能是scatter + wander構成的混合詞。

用法說明

squander暗指一開始擁有大量資源，然後把它們浪費在成果微不足道的地方。常用於如「squander an opportunity」或「squander an inheritance」之類的短語。也可以用在起步就沒有多少資源的情況下，但一般用在如「squander what little he had」之類的句子內。
