詞源[編輯]
源自泰米爾語 பறையர் (paṟaiyar),源自பறையன் (paṟaiyaṉ, 「鼓手」),源自பறை (paṟai, 「鼓」)或馬拉雅拉姆語 പറയർ (paṟayar),源自പറയൻ (paṟayan, 「鼓手」),源自പറ (paṟa, 「鼓」)。泰米爾語中的parai或馬來語中的para指的是一種王要宣布消息時敲的大型鼓。專職敲parai的人稱為paraiyar,在基於種姓的社會階層中屬較低等級,因此派生出了這個詞。
或者,派生自梵語 पर (para, 「遙遠的;局外人」)。
