詞源[編輯]
首次記錄於17世紀，名詞用法見於5世紀拉丁語 oxymōrum (形容詞)，oxymōrus (形容詞)的中性主格形式，[1]源自古希臘語 ὀξύμωρος (oxúmōros)，由下列成分構成的複合詞：ὀξύς (oxús, 「尖銳的，尖端的」)[2]（英語oxy-，亦出現於oxygen (「氧氣」)） + μωρός (mōrós, 「愚蠢的」)[3]（英語moron (「蠢貨」)）。字面義為「尖銳愚蠢」。[4] – 這個詞本身就是自相矛盾，因此是一種自描述詞。對比sophomore (字面意思是「聰明笨蛋」)，其得到了相似的解釋。複合詞形式ὀξύμωρον (oxúmōron)在現在流傳下來的古希臘語文獻中不可考。[5]

- 歷史上，oxymoron曾指「有道理的悖論」，[6]或者「聰慧但愚蠢的說法」，「大智若愚的說法」。[4]它本意用於指出這種說法中深藏的道理，論點。白話中，oxymoron常用來指「自相矛盾」，但是部分使用者認為是錯誤的，因此在某些情況下最好避免使用。
