源自中世紀拉丁語 incarcerātus,incarcerō (「囚禁」)的過去分詞,源自拉丁語 in- (「里,內」) + carcer (「牢房」),即「放入牢房」。與cancel (「用線劃掉」)和chancel (「格柵,柵欄後的地方」)有關。
