源自glore的一個（可能是蘇格蘭語的）變體，源自中古英語 glōren、glouren (「照耀；瞪着」)^[1]，或原子glow (「盯着」，棄用)，最終源自某斯堪的納維亞（北日耳曼語支）語言。^[2]同源詞有低地德語 gloren (「閃爍；發微光」)、中古荷蘭語 gloren、冰島語 glóra^[1]。還見glare。
