[編輯]源自古英語 gǣstan (「驚嚇,折磨」)的衍生詞 + -lic與ghostly(中古英語中亦作「gastlich」)的異文合併。等價於ghast/gast + -ly。16世紀時因異文合併,帶「gh」的拼寫發展起來。
