源自古英語 gǣstan (「驚嚇，折磨」)的衍生詞 + -lic與ghostly（中古英語中亦作「gastlich」）的異文合併。等價於ghast/gast + -ly。16世紀時因異文合併，帶「gh」的拼寫發展起來。
