源自中古英語 gawnt、gawnte (「瘦的」),源自古法語 [具體何詞?],可能源自斯堪的納維亞或北日耳曼語支源頭,與古諾爾斯語 gandr (「魔杖,棍」)有關,源自原始日耳曼語 *gandaz (「棍」),源自原始印歐語 *gʷʰen- (「打,驅使」)。
與冰島語 gandur (「魔杖」)、挪威語 gand (「高而尖的棒子;又高又瘦的人」)、丹麥語 gand、gan、挪威語 gana (「修剪的樹枝」)、巴伐利亞語 Gunten (「一種楔或釘」)。亦與古英語 gūþ (「戰鬥」)、拉丁語 dēfendō (「抵擋,避開,防禦」)有關。亦對比瑞典語方言用詞gank (「瘦馬」)。
