詞源

源自早期形式elritch，其詞源不詳。一般認為後半部分-ritch是古英語 rīċe (「王國」)（參見riche）。一部分人認為前半部分el-派生自一個指「外來，陌生」的古英語詞根（與古英語 ellende和現代英語else有關），有些人則認為其派生自elf。因霍華德·菲利普斯·洛夫克拉夫特的著作而重新引入大眾文學。
