詞源[編輯]

(< 900) 中古英語 been < 古英語 beon < 原始印歐語 *bheu-（變成，出現）。不規則變位形式源於古英語複合動詞 bēon-wesan。
be來自根「成為，變得」，am、is、are均源自「存在」，was、were源自「停留，保持」。

be (第三人稱單數簡單現在時 is, 現在分詞 being, 過去式 was, 過去分詞 been) be 是英語中的系動詞。

    Once upon a time, there was a monk who lived in isolation.　從前有個隱居的僧侶。

  5. 留在（某地）
    They will be here until Christmas.　他們將在這裡，一直（住）到聖誕節。
  6. 出席、到場
    I'll be there soon.　我一會就到。
    The postman has been today, but my tickets have still not yet come.　郵遞員今天來過了，但我的票還沒到。
  7. 前往、訪問、到
    I have been to Spain many times.　我去過西班牙很多次。
  8. 來自、是（某地的）人
    She is from Italy.　她是意大利人。
  9. （用於提供信息）
    He was president of France from 1981 to 1995.　他在1981-1995年間是法國總統。
    The sky is blue.　天是藍的。
  10. (無人稱,weather)（用於描述情況、表達想法）
    Why is it so dark in here?　這裡怎麼這麼暗？
    It is thirty-five degrees outside, and next week it is expected to hit fourty!　現在外面35°C，下周可能會超過40°C。
  11. (無人稱,time)（用於表達時間）
    It is almost eight.　快八點了。

    3 times 5 is fifteen.　3乘5得15。

    The mail was received yesterday.　信是在昨天收到的。
