源自中古英語 asure，源自古法語 azur，派生自阿拉伯語 لَازَوَرْد (lāzaward，「青金石」)，l 被誤解為法語冠詞 l' 而被刪去。阿拉伯語詞源自古典波斯語 لاجورد (lājward，「青金石」)，源自巴達克山處Lajward地區的名字。
