詞源[編輯]
Fortescue 認為此詞源自原始愛斯基摩語 *aʁvaɣ (「手的邊緣」)，指的是到第五根手指後出現的東西。另外，Dorais 和 Starostin 亦認為此為繼承自原始因紐特語 *aʁvi-，源自原始愛斯基摩語 *aʁvi-，兩者的意義皆為「跨過」，指在達到第五個數字後跨到下一隻手上。
