詞源[編輯]

最早由愷撒、塔西佗使用，以區分高盧人（日耳曼人來自萊茵河以東）。來源不確定，有多種說法，如派生自凱爾特語族/高盧語詞^[1]「鄰居」（對比古愛爾蘭語 gair (「鄰居」)）^[2]或「吵鬧」（古愛爾蘭語 garim (「大叫」)），^[2]，或與古高地德語 gēr (「矛」)有關；^[2]可能源自某一部落。^[2]與germānus (「兄弟姊妹的」)無關，其派生自germen (「芽，蕾」)。^[1]
