源自中古英语 taper，源自古英语 tapor (“蜡烛，灯芯”)，其词源不详。可能源自拉丁语 papyrus (“纸莎草”，中世纪时指“蜡烛芯”)。若如此，则是papyrus and paper的同源对似词。另可能源自凯尔特语族中某个与爱尔兰语 tapar、威尔士语 tampr (“火把”)有关的词，亦对比梵语 तपती (tápati, “温暖，发热”)。还见tepid。
