源自拉丁语 syncretismus ← 古希腊语 συγκρητισμός (sunkrētismós, “克里特城邦的联合”) ← συγκρητίζω (sunkrētízō, “联合以对抗共同敌人”) ← σύν (sún, “一同”) （参见英语syn-） + Κρῆτες (Krêtes, “克里特人”)。等同于syn- + Crete + -ism（“克里特人联合”）。
