源自中古英语 ferthing ← 古英语 fēorþing, fēorþung (“四分之一；法寻”) ← fēorþa (“第四”) ← 原始日耳曼语 *fedurþungaz (“四分之一”)，可能受古诺尔斯语 fjórðungr (“第四部分，四分之一”)影响。等同于fourth + -ing。
