仿译德语 Dunkle Materie,来自dunkel () + Materie (物质)。最早于1933年由瑞士天文学家弗里茨·兹威基所造,因1970年代美国天文学家薇拉·鲁宾的一篇关于星系自转问题的论文而为大众所知。
