源自中古英语 courencowre,源自中古低地德语 kûren (潜伏;游荡)北日耳曼语支冰岛语 kúra (打盹))。同源词包括德语 kauern (蹲伏)荷兰语 koeren (蹲守)塞尔维亚-克罗地亚语 kutriti (躺着缩成一团)瑞典语 kura (蜷缩)。与coward无关,其源自拉丁语。
