源自中古英语 couren、cowre，源自中古低地德语 kûren (“潜伏；游荡”)或北日耳曼语支（冰岛语 kúra (“打盹”)）。同源词包括德语 kauern (“蹲伏”)、荷兰语 koeren (“蹲守”)、塞尔维亚-克罗地亚语 kutriti (“躺着缩成一团”)、瑞典语 kura (“蜷缩”)。与coward无关，其源自拉丁语。
