源头不明。原义为“两轮马车”，现在可以指所有的车辆和自行车 (Schwarz 1992: 393)。根据 Ramstedt (1905: 23)，本词借自伊朗语族（阿富汗arabá, Shugni. arōbā），阿拉伯语 عَرَبَة‎ (ʕaraba)，乌拉尔语族，欧洲、高加索语言。Rybatzki 认为与布鲁夏斯基语 arabá 有关。Doerfer (1963/1965/1967/1975) 认为源自突厥语族或阿拉伯语群。乌兹别克语 arava借入塔吉克语 aråba （“车厢”） (Doerfer 1967: 12) 和 Ormuri arâba （“轮子”） (M29: 387)。其他突厥语族同源词包括维吾尔语 araba, 吉尔吉斯语 арба (arba), Taranchi hariba, 楚瓦什语 урапа (urap̬a), 巴什基尔语 арба (arba),鞑靼语 арба (arba, “覆盖著的车皮”)。Rybatzki 认为所有的土耳其语形都与布鲁夏斯基语太相似，因此无法确定真正的来源。
