继承自中古英语 algorisme, augrym,派生自盎格鲁-诺曼语 algorisme, augrim,派生自中世纪拉丁语 algorismus,派生自阿拉伯语 الخُوَارِزْمِيّ (al-ḵuwārizmiyy),源自波斯数学家 Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī,该词的意思是“来自花剌子模的人”。因为受到了无关的 古希腊语 ἀριθμός (arithmós)(同英语 arithmo-)影响,发音产生了变化(-s- > -th-)[1]
