继承自中古英语 algorisme, augrym，派生自盎格鲁-诺曼语 algorisme, augrim，派生自中世纪拉丁语 algorismus，派生自阿拉伯语 الخُوَارِزْمِيّ (al-ḵuwārizmiyy)，源自波斯数学家 Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī，该词的意思是“来自花剌子模的人”。因为受到了无关的 古希腊语 ἀριθμός (arithmós)（同英语 arithmo-）影响，发音产生了变化（-s- > -th-）[1]。
