词源[编辑]
传统上认为派生自腓尼基语/布匿语名称𐤔𐤐𐤍 𐤀𐤉 (‘i shapan) “蹄兔之地”（与希伯来语 שָׁפָן (shafan, “蹄兔”)同源），认为是当时的腓尼基人觉得伊比利亚的兔子长得类似蹄兔。这种说法得到古罗马的一些作者的认同，[1]也解释了为什么在一些古罗马钱币上伊比利亚会画上兔子。但后来一些学者怀疑这种说法的准确性[2]，并提出了其他可能的腓尼基语词根，比如𐤑𐤐𐤍 𐤀𐤉 (‘i ṣapun “北方的土地/岛”)。[3]
