继承自古英语 Grēcas (“希腊人”)，Crēcas的变体，来自原始西日耳曼语 *Krēkō，来自拉丁语 Graecus，源头不明，可能衍生自地名Γραῖα (Graîa)或来自部落名Graii的其他古巴尔干语族形式，参见英语维基百科条目Griko、Names of the Greeks。希腊语中有个同源词Γραικός (Graikós)，是从神话时代的祖先Γραίοι (Graíoi，“格瑞西安族”)而来。日尔曼语族同源词包括荷兰语 Griek、德语 Grieche。英语和日尔曼语族同源词中的⟨g⟩，是受到法语 grec和古典拉丁语 Graecus的影响下恢复的。
