该短语暗指了将自己的舌头伸出搭到自己脸上的面部表情。首个书面引文见于1828年,[1]但是已经不清楚它指的是字面意思还是现在的意思。较晚出现的Richard Barham的引文中的这个词的意思则很清楚。[2]
