來自中古英語 tuwel，來自古法語 tueil, tuel, tudel (“管”)（現代法語 tuyau也經由此），來自通俗拉丁語 *tūta，來自古法蘭克語 *thūta (“管”)，來自原始日耳曼語 *þeutǭ (“管，水道，流”)，來自*þeutaną (“嚎叫，吼，鳴”)，來自原始印歐語 *tu-, *tutu- (“鳥泣鳴，尖叫”)。對照來自同一日耳曼語族源頭的西班牙語 and 葡萄牙語 tudel。
