- 源自愛爾蘭語 smidiríní、smiodairíní，源自smiodar (“碎片”) + -ín (指小后缀) + -í（-aí (构成某些名词的复数的后缀)的缩短形式）。
- 源自smithers (“碎片；原子”)插入后缀-een (在爱尔兰英语中构成指小词的名词后缀)。
- 源自爱尔兰英语（韦克斯福德）smaddereen，smattering (“少量某物；浅显的知识”)的一个变体。
