词源
[编辑]源自泰米爾語 பறையர் (paṟaiyar)，源自பறையன் (paṟaiyaṉ，“鼓手”)，源自பறை (paṟai，“鼓”)或馬拉雅拉姆語 പറയർ (paṟayar)，源自പറയൻ (paṟayan，“鼓手”)，源自പറ (paṟa，“鼓”)。泰米尔语中的parai或马来语中的para指的是一种王要宣布消息时敲的大型鼓。专职敲parai的人称为paraiyar，在基于种姓的社会阶层中属较低等级，因此派生出了这个词。
