[编辑]源自泰米爾語 பறையர் (paṟaiyar),源自பறையன் (paṟaiyaṉ,“鼓手”),源自பறை (paṟai,“鼓”)或馬拉雅拉姆語 പറയർ (paṟayar),源自പറയൻ (paṟayan,“鼓手”),源自പറ (paṟa,“鼓”)。泰米尔语中的parai或马来语中的para指的是一种王要宣布消息时敲的大型鼓。专职敲parai的人称为paraiyar,在基于种姓的社会阶层中属较低等级,因此派生出了这个词。
