詞源

字面意思是「踢桶」。對其來源,有許多種說法,《牛津英語詞典》給出了以下幾種:

  • 人站在桶上,头套在套索里,踢开桶后便能自杀。但《牛津英語詞典》表示这只是一个猜测;
  • bucket 的有个古旧用法,指横梁,猪被宰杀前被倒挂在横梁上,而 kick the bucket 最初表示猪的垂死挣扎。《牛津英語詞典》认为这个理论更合理。

罗马天主教主教阿博特·霍恩则提出了另一种理论。[1]
