源自早期形式hauty、haultic，仿照英語 naughty与英語 high调整了拼写，源自中古英語 hautein、hautain（-ein、-ain经由代表*hauteinnesse的词形hautenesse变为了-y，参见haughtiness），源自中古英語 haute (“高傲的”)，源自古法語 haut、hault (“高耸的”)，源自古法蘭克語 *hauh、*hōh (“高耸的；自傲的”)和拉丁語 altus (“高的，深的”)。详见high、old。
