From Proto-Hellenic *agrós, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éǵros. Cognates include Mycenaean Greek 𐀀𐀒𐀫 (a-ko-ro), Latin ager, Sanskrit अज्र (ájra) and Old English æcer (English acre).
