From Proto-Indo-Aryan *katarás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kátaras, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷóteros, from *kʷos (which) (whence also ()). Cognate with Ancient Greek πότερος (póteros), Lithuanian katràs, Russian который (kotoryj), Old English hwæþer (whence English whether).
