詞源

二十世紀借自古希臘語 ἐμπάθεια (empátheia，字面意思是“激情”)（由ἐν (en，“在，於”) + πάθος (páthos，“感覺”)構成），等同於em- +‎ -pathy，由Edward Bradford Titchener在1909年造出，用以翻譯德語 Einfühlung。現代詞彙的希臘語 εμπάθεια (empátheia)則具有相反含義，指對某人懷有強烈負面情緒與偏見。
