    繼承自原始意大利語 *dormiō[1][2] 源自原始印歐語 *dr̥m-yé-ti, 源自*drem- () + *-yéti。 音變規律 *-mj- > 原始意大利語 *-nj 很可能由於原始印歐語的音節劃分規則而未作用於本詞。帶有成音節 *m̥ 的序列 *gʷm̥y- 演變為 veni-,而帶有成音節 *r̥*dr̥my- 則演變為 dormi-。如果原始印歐語形式被劃分音節為 *drm̥y-,預期的拉丁語演變結果將會是 **dreniō[3] 同源詞包括古教會斯拉夫語 дрѣмати (drěmati打瞌睡,打盹)俄語 дрема́ть (dremátʹ)梵語 द्राति (drāti睡覺)古希臘語 δαρθάνω (darthánō睡覺)
