[编辑]源自早期现代英语brethren，brother的复数，源自中古英語 brethren，源自中古英語 brethere、brether + -en (复数后缀)。 最终源自古英語 brōþor、brōþru (“兄弟们”)，受到了古英語 brēþer的影响，其为brōþor (“兄/弟”)的与格复数。等价于brother + -en 複。对比德語 Brüder (“兄弟们”)。详见brother。这种元音变化（自o到e）称为元音变音。
