源自法語 apologie，源自晚期拉丁語 apologia，源自古希臘語 ἀπολογία (apología，“辯護詞”)，源自 ἀπολογοῦμαι (apologoûmai，“為自己辯護”)，源自 ἀπόλογος (apólogos，“敘述、故事”)，源自 ἀπό (apó，“從、自、離開”) (參見 apo-) + λόγος (lógos，“言語”)。英語 apologia 的同源對似詞。字面分析等同於apo- +‎ -logy。
