古典用語的現代解讀;最早可能是指羅馬道路,或特指金色里程碑(羅馬道路的原點)。[1]

根據里爾的阿蘭1175年所著的 Liber Parabolarum (591),該短語的拉丁語形式為 mīlle viae dūcunt hominēs per saecula Rōmam (一千條道路永遠能帶領人通往羅馬)[2]

英語中可能最早由喬叟使用於其1391年著作《論星盤》的序言 (39–40) 中,作“right as diverse pathes leden the folk the righte wey to Rome”(“如同各條小徑帶領人們走上通向羅馬的道路”)。[3][4][5][6]
