源自中古英語 Temese，源自古英語 Temes、Temese（對比威爾士語 Tafwys），源自拉丁語 Tamesis、Tamesas[1]。帶 h 的異體拼寫起於中古英語，是受詞源來自希臘語的錯誤認識所影響。[2]
拉丁語名稱來自原始凱爾特語 *tamesās (“河，水流”, 字面意思是“黑暗”)，*tames 的陽性 ā-詞幹形式[3]，源自原始印歐語 *tm̥Hes-，*témHes-、*témHos- (“黑暗”) 的零階形式，來自詞根 *temH- (“黑暗的”) 的 s-詞幹形式。與原始凱爾特語 *temeslos (“黑暗”)、*temos (“黑暗的”)有關。原始凱爾特語中“黑暗（的）”比喻作“水”的現象也見於原始凱爾特語 *dubros (“水；黑暗的”)，源自原始印歐語 *dʰubrós (“黑暗的”)，其也是威爾士語 dŵr (“水”)、愛爾蘭語 dobhar (“水，海；黑暗的，陰暗的”)的源頭。類似的水體名稱也見於歐洲其他地方，如葡萄牙的杜羅河（Douro）。
亦有可能源自原始凱爾特語 *tā-[4]、*tāyo- (“融化；流動”)，源自原始印歐語 *teh₂- (“融化”)，或源自一未知的印歐語詞根[5][6]。
