詞源

音譯自希伯來語 יְהֹוָה (yəhōwā)，馬所拉文本中聖經希伯來語יהוה（讀法各自紛紜）的發音。馬所拉文本的發音法為所謂的 qere perpetuum（在《塔纳赫》的礼拜仪式中，读出某个书面词时总会用固定的词替换），在本例中是把該詞替換讀成אֲדֹנָי (Adonai，“我的主”)。

在英語中，此詞最早是寫成 Iehoua，出自1530年的廷代爾譯本：

I appeared vnto Abraham Isaac and Iacob an allmightie God: but in my name Iehouah was I not knowne vnto them.（出埃及記 6:3）

廷代爾使用了 Iehouah，而非此前威克里夫譯本的 Adonay。欽定版聖經也在這一節當中使用了全本唯一的 Jehovah，其他地方均作 Lord。楊氏直譯本 (1898) 寫作 Jehovah。新欽定版聖經 (1982) 則使用了 Lord。
