继承自中古英语 handsum、hondsom,等同于hand + -some。对照荷兰语 handzaam、德国低地德语 handsaam。原意是指“容易处理和使用”,因此便出现了“合适的”和“灵巧的,聪明的”等含义(16世纪中期),并产生了表示欣赏的现代化含义(16世纪晚期)。
