晚期中古英语,源自盎格鲁-诺曼语 cotage中世纪拉丁语 cotagium,源自古诺曼语 cotcote (小屋,村舍) + -age (地产周边),源自原始日耳曼语 *kutan*kuta- (棚屋),可能源自印欧语系以外,但也可能借自乌拉尔语系,对比芬兰语 kota (小屋,房子)匈牙利语 ház (房子),两者均源自原始芬兰-乌戈尔语/原始乌拉尔语 *kota。但亦对比荷兰语和英语 hut[1][2]

古北方法语cote可能是源自古诺尔斯语 kot (小屋),与亦来自原始日耳曼语古英语 cot同源。

俚语义“公厕”自19世纪,由于两者外观相似。
