源自中古英語 swath、swathe，源自古英語 swæþ、swaþu (“轨道；轨迹；足迹；印记；遗迹；疤痕”)，源自原始日耳曼語 *swaþō (“被风扫过之处；阔野；边境；土地”)，源自原始印歐語 *swem(bʰ)- (“折；转；荡”)。[1]

与荷蘭語 zwade、zwad (“刈幅；干草列”)、德語 Schwade (“刈幅；干草列”)、冰島語 svæði (“区域，地区”)同源。

其他词源资料

对应中古低地德语和中古荷兰语swat，中古高地德语swade，古弗里斯蘭語 swethe (“边界”)。词干意为切割留下的痕迹。

在888年可考于英语中，意为“痕迹”，在1475年可考为更现代的词义。与德語 Schwaden (“一排割下的草或谷物”)同源。

在日耳曼语系外无确切的同源词。
