繼承自古法語 biau cop，首次記錄於約1210年。[1]等價於beau (“美好的、美麗的”) + coup (“打、擊”)。後者也有「幫助喝湯或喝飲料」的意思，大約在1375年首次紀錄，其意義可能觸發或強化了 beaucoup 表示「很多」的意思。
